From full-time study to an Engineering Apprenticeship: Reuben's story

This case study highlights how an EAL qualification helped Reuben Larter build a strong foundation in engineering, supporting his successful progression from full-time education into an apprenticeship.

For Reuben, completing his EAL Level 3 Engineering qualification at Gower College Swansea was the first step towards building a career in engineering.

As a full-time student, Reuben developed the technical knowledge, practical skills and industry understanding needed to pursue a career in the sector. As part of his course, he gained practical experience across a range of engineering disciplines, including welding and machining, helping him build the hands-on skills valued by employers and preparing him for the next stage of his engineering career.

On completing his qualification, Reuben successfully progressed from full-time education into employment, securing an apprenticeship with Unit Superheater Engineering.

Continuing to develop in the workplace

As part of his apprenticeship programme, Reuben will return to Gower College Swansea in September 2026 on a block-release basis, where he will continue building on his existing skills and knowledge while working towards the completion of his apprenticeship.

This blended approach will enable Reuben to further develop his technical expertise while gaining valuable experience in a real-world engineering environment, combining college learning with practical experience in the workplace.
