EAL was proud to support the SkillELECTRIC 2025 Final held in South Wales, where history was made as Ellis Stevenson became the competition's first-ever female champion.
It was an inspiring few days celebrating the remarkable talent within the electrotechnical sector, with finalists facing a complicated installation task marked against tough criteria. As part of our commitment to supporting the next generation of skilled professionals, EAL joined forces with the NICEIC to provide a significant career-boosting prize for the competitors, focusing on the vital transition to green technologies.
Reflecting the fact that the core competence of a qualified electrician is the foundation from which to upskill in low-carbon technologies, this year’s challenge included tasks on solar PV and electric vehicle charging point technology.
To support this journey, in a joint prize from EAL and the NICEIC, once qualified, our competitors will be able to access training through the NICEIC’s Electrician Plus package to gain the EAL Level 3 Awards in EV Charging Points, Solar PV and Electrical Energy Storage Systems, free of charge.
This initiative ensures that the UK's brightest electrical talents are equipped with the qualifications needed to drive the country's green energy transition.
The competition, organised by National Electrotechnical Training (NET) in conjunction with WorldSkills UK, took place at Bridgend College. Finalists were tested on wiring and connection skills, inspection and testing, and fault finding within a strict timeframe.
Ellis Stevenson, a 22-year-old recently qualified apprentice from SECTT and UHI Moray, excelled across the intensive three-day final. Employed by Campbell & McHardy Ltd in Moray, Scotland, Ellis returned to the competition after missing out on the finals in 2024. Her determination paid off as she won her heat in June before claiming Gold in the national final.
Speaking after her win, Ellis said: “I’m completely shocked, I didn’t expect to win so when I heard my name it took me a few moments to realise what was happening! Everyone was watching from home and has been messaging to say well done. I’d like to say thank you to my tutor Iain McBean, I wouldn’t be here without him and his support has been incredible.”
Alison Parkes, Managing Director of EAL, commented: “We are incredibly proud to congratulate Ellis Stevenson on her historic achievement as the first female SkillELECTRIC champion, along with Adam, Fabian, and every finalist who competed this week. The excellent standard of work seen across the competition is a testament to the talent within our sector.
“At EAL, we are committed to equipping the workforce for a sustainable future, which is why we are delighted to join the NICEIC in awarding these competitors access to our Level 3 qualifications in EV charging, solar PV, and energy storage. These green skills are vital for the sector's evolution, and it is inspiring to see such talented professionals leading the way.”
