As we build towards the first ever Vocational Celebration Day on 6 August 2026, we’re proud to share the stories of some incredible vocational heroes who have been nominated through EAL’s Celebrating a Vocational Hero campaign.
From tutors and trainers to mentors and assessors, these individuals are making a lasting impact on learners every day, opening doors, building confidence, and helping shape the skilled workforce the UK needs for the future. Their dedication, encouragement and passion for vocational learning continue to inspire the next generation across engineering, manufacturing, construction and beyond.
Our third Vocational Hero is Gary Millington, Quality Manager at North West Training Council. Here is why he is a vocational hero:
"Throughout a career spanning more than 30 years, Gary has dedicated himself to championing high-quality vocational education and creating pathways that genuinely change lives. At NWTC, he has led significant improvements across the EPA journey, strengthening processes, enhancing quality assurance, and contributing to sustained increases in QAR and completion rates. Through strategic oversight and hands-on involvement, Gary ensures learners receive a consistent, supportive and industry-focused vocational experience that prepares them for long-term success.
Gary’s impact, however, extends far beyond the numbers. He is deeply committed to widening opportunity and supporting learners through both academic and personal challenges. He works to remove barriers, provide tailored guidance and create an environment where every learner feels valued, supported and capable of achieving their potential. By championing real-world readiness and fostering confidence, Gary has helped many individuals progress into meaningful careers, equipped with the skills that industry depends on.
Gary is proud to play a role in strengthening the talent pipeline within his community and advancing the reputation and value of vocational education. His dedication to excellence, inclusion and learner success reflects his passion for the transformative power of vocational pathways."
Vocational Celebration Day was created by Enginuity and EAL to champion the value of vocational education, challenge outdated perceptions, and celebrate the people and pathways driving the UK forward. This story just a snapshot of the extraordinary individuals working across the sector every day.
As momentum continues to grow ahead of August 2026, we encourage everyone to join the celebration by sharing stories, supporting learners, and recognising the vocational heroes helping others succeed.
