The EAL Level 2 Certificate in Cycle Maintenance is a Vocationally Related Qualification, it focuses on practical skills and knowledge. This ensures that when the learner completes the qualification they will have gained practical experience and some expectation of some of the situations that they could face in a job role within the sector. It covers the intermediate level knowledge and understanding of cycle maintenance and has been developed in consultation with colleges, training associations and the cycle maintenance sector. From this qualification learners may wish to progress to the EAL Level 3 Diploma in Cycle Maintenance.
The content and structure of the qualification has been developed to provide a broad based introduction to the practices and processes of cycle maintenance and developing the personal skills and attributes that learners need in order to develop confidence in their ability to work, learn and achieve their full potential at Level 2.
This is a graded qualification with the emphasis of the assessment on a ‘hands on‘ approach. The final assessment of the units will take the form of practical tasks / assignments and multiple-choice tests that reflect the learning outcome titles of the units. Each of these tasks/assignments will be marked and graded Pass, Merit, Distinction or Refer. Assessment guidance is provided within each unit.
The learner must complete all seven units, these are: Working safely in a maintenance environment, Identify customer service requirements, Apply the Current Standard relating to the sale of new cycles, Principles of cycle frame technology and cycle headsets, Principles of cycle gear systems, Principles of cycle brake systems and Principles of cycle hubs, wheel truing and cycle tyres and tubes.
There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification; although centres should ensure that the learners have the potential to achieve the units within this qualification. Learners must have the minimum levels of literacy and numeracy to comply with the health and safety aspects of the scheme, the completion of the learning outcomes and the external assessment.
