Aspiring welders can take the first steps towards a career in engineering from the comfort of their own home, thanks to innovative e-learning programmes created by industry and education specialists.
EAL, the specialist awarding organisation for industry qualifications, joined forces with e-learning experts Skills2Learn to design and develop new e-learning programmes to help learners seeking a professional career in welding.
They worked with the Weldability Sif Foundation, the Welding Institute, Central Bedfordshire College, College of North West London, Stoke on Trent College and Train4Trade, to develop a programme aligned to pipe and high integrity welding within EAL’s Level 3 Engineering and Technology and High Integrity Welding Technical Certificates.
There is also a Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) e-learning programme aligned to the Performing Engineering Operations Level 1 & 2 National Occupational Standards.
EAL’s managing director Julia Chippendale said: “It is important a wide range of options are available to help train welders of the future and these unique programmes are a great way to start. They use visually rich 2D and 3D graphics/animation, audio, video, text and interactive quizzes to engage learners and increase knowledge retention. The programme can be used to expand knowledge and understanding within the classroom or for personal study at home, enabling learners to engage with the content and learn at their own pace and in their own time. It is a fantastic tool for learners, training providers and employers.”
While providing a cost saving on materials, the programme also allows tutors to easily track and monitor learners’ progress to ensure they clearly understand all the elements involved.
The programme aims to:
- provide vital health and safety information
- give a technical understanding of welding processes
- deliver learning about using different welding processes and techniques
- enable understanding of fabrication processes and methods
- ensure knowledge about the aspects of quality control
- give an awareness of sustainability and environmental issues
- improve functional skills.
The PEO programme is aimed at colleges, training centres, students and apprentices. The programme contains over three hours of e-learning material. It consists of 15 modules, delivered via 2D and 3D images, animations, interactivity and professional voiceover. The programme is succeeded by an end test - a set of questions based on the current topic - for learners to test their knowledge.
The programme's main features:
- highly interactive and immersive
- engaging and educational
- stunningly realistic
- stimulating and enjoyable
- flexible, simple, and easy-to-use
- delivered online via a VLE
- SCORM compliant
- mapped to current National Occupational Standards.
